Spooky Towns to Visit in the United States that Aren’t Salem

May 27, 2025 by Shelley Thompson

Sure, we’re all itching to go to Salem, but we can’t all just pack up and go now can we? Luckily there are a ton of other towns in the United States that have heavy, haunted pasts. And since some of these towns are a bit on the obscure side, you can bet the crowds won’t’ be as massive, and we are all about that.

Here is our list of spooky towns that are worth a visit (if you dare!) Let’s go ghouls!

Savannah, Georgia

Editorial content

Book lovers know the Hamilton-Turner Inn is an absolute must if you’re visiting Savannah and want to experience the paranormal; made popular by the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, visitors have reported children laughing, billard balls rolling, and a strange cigar-smoking man sitting on the roof. After the Hamilton-Turner Inn, there are a number of homes, hotels, restaurants, and even a brewery to tour. Aside from individual tours, the city offers a number of walking tours.

Portland, Oregon

When we think of haunted cities, we certainly don’t think of Portland, but Portland’s Shanghai Tunnels have a dark history. These tunnels were once used to carry drugged sailors to the waterfront to be shipped miles out to sea. So yeah, there is some serious activity occurring in these areas.

Bannack, Montana

If you love a ghost town, then toward Bannack, Montana is the direction you need to head! What was once a booming town after gold was discovered in the 1860s, is now left dilapidated over time. During its glory days then sheriff, Henry Plummer, was a well-known criminal and gang leader that was responsible for over one hundred murders. Today you can visit the now ghost town and explore all the abandoned buildings.

Seattle, Washington

The year was 1889 and a massive fire took out a huge portion of Seattle’s business district. Of course, this was all rebuilt, but the ruins still exist. In fact, these ruins became hangouts for gangs, prostitutes, and opium addicts and the city had to then condemn the community. In the 1960s these tunnels opened again for tourism and to no one’s surprise, there has been a ton of paranormal activity reported.

St. Augustine, Florida

With it being the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine is bound to have a spirit or two roaming around. If you find yourself in the neighborhood, check out the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum that is said to be haunted by girls who drowned there in the 1870s. If that doesn’t quite tickle your fancy, St. Augustine has a ton of other places you can visit, as well as a number of ghost tours you can go on.
