Winter Weather Hair Care Tips

May 10, 2025 by Shelley Thompson

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, and… it’s not great for your hair. Once winter arrives and the temperatures start dropping, your hair and scalp become uncomfortable, flaky, rough, dry, and is prone to breakage, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Follow these tips for winter hair care and you’ll keep your hair and scalp happy all winter long.

Get a humidifier. During the winter, the air in our homes becomes incredibly dry because we’re running our heater or we’ve got a cozy fire going; and while this keeps us nice and warm, the dryness in the air isn’t great for hair, but we have an easy solution: nab a humidifier to put some moisture back into the air.

Don’t skimp on water. Getting enough water during the winter can be a challenge, but if you’re staying hydrated, then so is your hair! And if your hair is hydrated, it’s not breaking.

Avoid washing your hair too much and get a good conditioner. Shampooing your hair too frequently strips the hair of its natural oils, causing even more dryness and breakage. Do your best to hold off on washing your hair, and try to only wash every few days. As far as conditioner goes, find one that contains natural oils that will pump your locks full of hydration.

Snip snip. Regular trips to the salon for a trim should be a part of your hair care all year round, but these routine trims are especially important during the winter months to get those dry, dead ends off.

Avoid heat (as best as you can!) Okay, okay, we get it, it can be hard to avoid any and all types of heat, but especially during the winter, when your hair is a little more fragile than usual, taking seemingly small steps such as air drying and embracing your hairs natural texture can make all the difference.

Spa night, but for your hair. As most of us know, you can find a face mask for just about any kind of skin issue you may be having, and the same can be said for your hair. You can nab a hair mask typically anywhere that also sells face masks; not only do hair masks offer a ton of benefits to keep your hair protected from harsh winter weather, but they’re cheap and easy to use.

Don’t leave the house with wet hair. Not because you’ll catch a cold (or worse) but because going outside with wet hair in freezing temperatures can result in, well, frozen hair that breaks, and nobody wants that.
