Ditch the OTC Meds: Simple and Effective Home Remedies for Headaches

Headaches are a common health problem that affects everyone, regardless of age. It is an indication of poor health and is a result of stress, nutrition deficiency, poor lifestyle, or dehydration. Headaches can either be mild or destabilizing. Medications like Advil and aspirin often relieve headaches and other similar symptoms. However, numerous ways exist to eliminate headaches without taking these medications. Here are five simple and effective home remedies that can immediately relieve headaches.

Drink more water and eat water-rich fruits

Dehydration induces water-deprivation headaches, which are often mistaken as stress-induced headaches. Water-deprivation headaches also appear with other symptoms like dizziness, thirst, and extreme fatigue.

Drinking at least 18 ounces of water and getting enough rest can relieve these types of headaches. You can also reduce symptoms by eating vegetables or water-rich fruits like watermelon and cucumber.

Try an herbal headache remedy

Many people suffering from constant headaches take herbal medications cause of the immense relief they provide. These herbal remedies were used long ago and have proven effective by modern research.

Herbal medications like Dong Quai, curcumin, butterbur, ginger, and chamomile can immediately relieve headaches. You can take them by brewing their leaves into tea or crush their roots into a thick paste.

Consider doing some yoga

Yoga is an old relaxation practice that calms the mind, improves flexibility, and helps reduce weight. It can also relieve long-term headaches that have defied modern medications. Yoga is painless and also guarantees other benefits as long as it is performed correctly.

Specific yoga poses are guaranteed to unclog toxins and relieve headaches. These poses include the Padangusthasana, Ardha Pincha Mayurasana, and Paschimottanasana. The yoga poses help improve circulation and draw out elements distrusting the body’s balance. 

Use a cold compression pad to soothe the pain

Cold compresses or ice packs can also relieve headaches. Cryotherapy or cold therapy goes as far back as 100 years and is a go-to treatment for aches and pains in the body. To use cold compression therapy, you can either buy a compression pad from the store or DIY one.

Apply this cold bag of ice onto your head and leave it for a few minutes. Switch the cold packs around your head regularly to prevent frostbite and ensure the coldness spreads throughout your scalp for immediate relief. 

Try essential oils

Like herbal remedies, essential oils have several medicinal effects and can even treat headaches. Unlike medications, they do not come with side effects and can also provide additional health benefits.

Essential oils are a thick concentration of aromatic plants that work via sensory stimulation. Eucalyptus essential oil, especially Australian blue gum, does a good job of relieving sinus headaches.
