Aside from cleaning the spot you spilled sauce on, when was the last time you cleaned your oven? Cleaning your oven is necessary for optimum performance and hygiene. However, the most common issue is that many people don’t know where to start or what products are safe to use. That’s why we’ve compiled tips to help you clean and maintain your oven easily.
The self-cleaning option
The self-cleaning oven feature is a safe and effective method as it cleans your oven exactly the way the manufacturer intended. The self-cleaning feature incinerates leftover food particles using high temperatures (between 900° and 1000°) for about six hours.

This process can release unpleasant odors into the house. Furthermore, harmful fumes are released into the air. That’s why opening all windows is advisable before starting the process. Following your oven’s manual is also important to avoid any issues.
Cook with care
The ultimate oven maintenance tip is to cook carefully. For instance, you should clean the oven immediately after making meals that often mess the oven up.

Also, you should avoid placing a baking sheet or aluminum foil on the bottom of the oven (on top of the vents). This could damage your burners and block the flow of heat. The vent should be left open, not covered.
Pay special attention to the racks
Cleaning oven racks in their usual position can be quite a challenge. Removing the racks completely from the oven makes them easier to clean. After removing them, the next step is cleaning them.

First, soak the racks in boiling water with a little dishwasher detergent. Then, after two hours, scrub the racks with a brush, rinse, dry, and return them to the oven. You could soak the racks in the tub- you just have to wash it after.
DIY oven cleaner
Although chemical oven cleaners are effective, DIY cleaners are simpler to use as they aren’t harsh on your oven’s surface. As simple as this DIY cleaning solution is, it works quickly and effectively.

To make the oven cleaner, mix baking soda, vinegar, and water into a paste. While the water softens hardened food particles, the baking soda works as an abrasive. Apply the paste on your oven’s exterior and leave it for 30 minutes or more to break down baked-on food.
How often should you clean your oven?
You should wipe down your burners and stove after each messy meal or at least once a week. Similarly, when thick food residue falls to the bottom of your oven, remove it immediately, as it can catch fire. But how often should a deep cleaning be?

You should give your oven a deep cleaning two to three times a year. If you’re using the self-cleaning option, you should deep clean just twice a year, as overcleaning can damage your oven.
