What’s the first thing you notice when you visit someone’s home? Or maybe it’s even the first thing you notice when you walk into your own front door? The answer is: how great it smells! Okay, well, we hope it’s how great it smells but between kids, pets, and let’s be honest, sometimes a particularly gnarly bag of trash, it’s the lack of fresh scent we notice. Today we’re going to be discussing some of our best hacks to ensure your home is always smelling delightful! Let’s get started.
Our personal favorite, candles. Okay, duh, this is kind of a no-brainer, but especially around the holiday season, lighting a few candles around the house is not only cozy but makes the whole place smell incredible. The great thing about candles is there are a ton of options out there; say for instance you love the sound of a crackling fire, wood wick candles are the way to go, whereas if you prefer a candle with a strong scent, Bath and Body Works 3-wick candles will never disappoint.

For those of you that prefer a more natural alternative, consider a simmer pot. A simmer pot simply involves adding ingredients such as cinnamon sticks, oranges, and fresh herbs to a pot of boiling water and letting it simmer throughout the day. We love simmer pots because the smell is totally customizable and you can make it as strong or as subtle as you like.
If the trash can tends to be the source of your odor issues, try placing one or two dryer sheets at the bottom of your trash can to help control the aroma. This can be kind of hard to remember, so we recommend keeping a box of dryer sheets in your kitchen near your trash bag stash. Dryer sheets can also be placed in your closet, drawers, under couch cushions, and under bed pillows to freshen your space up a bit.

We expect our vacuum cleaners to do a lot around the house and sometimes that means cleaning up some pretty yucky messes this can lead to some interesting smells coming from the vacuum itself; if you’re experiencing this, first you’ll want to thoroughly clean the filters, and once they’re dry you’ll place a few drops of your favorite essential oil inside, around, and on the filter, then the next time you vacuum, you’ll only smell the essential oils and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how fresh it smells.
Making your own linen spray out of water and fabric softener or essential oils is super easy and this concoction (either one in fact) will have your home smelling wonderful in no time. Use this spray on your curtains, furniture, rugs, throw pillows, and bedding to keep every room smelling fresh.
